The United States of America is a federation of 50 states in North America, bordered by Canada and Mexico. Alaska lies in the north-west and Hawaii in the Pacific. The USA is the fourth largest country in the world by both population and area. Its largest cities are New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The climate is highly varied, from arctic in Alaska to tropical in Florida. The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when temperatures are moderate and the landscapes glow with colour.
