Gambia
The Gambia, the smallest country in mainland Africa, lies along the Gambia River, bordering Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean. The capital is Banjul. The country has a rich history reaching back to the kingdoms of Ghana and Songhai, and it gained independence from Great Britain in 1965. The tropical climate brings heavy rainfall in the wet season, and the landscape is varied by savannahs, gallery forests and mangroves. The best time to visit is the dry season, from November to May, with temperatures from 24°C to 30°C.
